looking for people who have done this before i do something dumb next tuesday.
i run a drainage tile crew out of Wahpeton. the truck that pulls our 25 ft gooseneck with the Bobcat on it is a 2011 Ram 2500 with the 5.7 Hemi and 212,000 miles. it pulls fine. it also gets 8 mpg doing it and the rockers are gone. time for a diesel.
there is a 2022 Ram 2500 Big Horn crew cab 4x4 on lakeparkautoconnection.com. 6.7 Cummins, 68RFE, 3.73s, 41,200 miles, factory gooseneck and fifth wheel prep, rear air. bank repo, sitting at a lender yard in Salina, Kansas. it is a sealed bid setup, one number from you, you never see anybody else's. the listing has 38 photos, a cold start video and the Carfax.
what i found at dealers for 2022 2500s with the 6.7 and 35 to 55k: 52,900 in Fargo, 54,400 in Grand Forks, 56,500 at a store in Sioux Falls that has had theirs since june. i am thinking somewhere under 48.
so, if photos are all you get, what would you be looking at? bids close tuesday at noon.

went through all 38. two things.
photo 27, the one looking up at the front axle from the driver side. the front diff is wet around the pinion and dirt has stuck to it. could be the pinion seal, could be the vent pushing gear oil out after a hot run. either way a few hundred bucks. not a reason to walk, but you want to know before you bid.
photo 31, left rear. three tires are the factory Firestone Transforce, that one is a Cooper AT3 with a taller sidewall. on a 4x4 that lives in 4 high all winter you want the same rolling diameter on all four or you are winding up the transfer case. budget a tire.
the cold start video looks good. no white smoke hanging around, idle settles in about 20 seconds. the 68RFE is the weak link next to the Aisin, but at 41k pulling a skid steer you are nowhere close to what kills them. ask for a flashlight shot under the front diff and one of the driver door jamb sticker. whether they send them tells you something too.

one more for tony's list. on a diesel bought off photos, confirm the emissions equipment is all there before you bid. not preaching, it is money. a truck somebody deleted and tuned is illegal to drive on the road, plenty of dealers won't take one in trade, and putting the DPF, the SCR and the right calibration back on a 6.7 runs 5 to 8 grand at a dealer.
tells in the pictures: a big straight pipe tip instead of the stock one, pod gauges or a tuner screen stuck to the dash, no DEF cap beside the fuel cap. and if the Carfax shows a dealer visit for an emissions recall, that is a decent sign it was stock at least then.
22 Big Horns are a sweet spot. good luck.

both of you earned your keep. emailed the lake park people yesterday morning with tony's list and had 9 more photos by 3 in the afternoon. somebody at the yard actually crawled under it with a light.
front diff is wet at the pinion, it is the seal, not the vent. dirt caked on, no drip on the concrete. door sticker says GVWR 10,000 and payload 2,317, tire placard says 275/70R18. stock tip, DEF gauge in the cluster shot, no pods, no tuner. the Cooper is confirmed, so that is a tire.
took 300 for the seal and 250 for a tire off my number. bid went in at 47,800. tuesday.
with the factory prep the pucks are already in the bed floor under little caps. look for the gooseneck ball insert in the photos, because if it isn't there you are buying one. the Ram insert is around 400 at the parts counter. mine came off a used lot without it and nobody said a word.
rear air is great with a gooseneck. check the compressor runs when you key on, you hear it under the bed for a few seconds.

got it. 47,800. email at 12:40 saying mine was the high bid. i will never find out if second place was 47,700 or 41,000, and that bugs me more than i figured it would.
wired it the same afternoon from the bank here in town. the invoice from Lake Park Auto Connection was the bid and nothing on top, no buyer's premium. i read it twice, because every auction i have ever bought from finds its 10 percent somewhere. Salina is well inside their free delivery miles and they said about two weeks.
no gooseneck ball in the photos. noted, gooseneck, thanks.

lurker, first post. 23, working rigs out of Williston and saving for a diesel, so i read every one of these twice.
how does it actually get to you? does some guy drive it up 81 and I-29 so you get it with 600 more on the odo, or is it on a trailer? and do you have to go pick it up or does it come to your house?

trailer. showed up saturday on a car hauler gooseneck behind a Kenworth T270, my truck and a Polaris Ranger going on to Fergus. listing said 41,236, my driveway said 41,238, which is him backing it off. it comes to your address. i never set foot in lake park, i have driven through on 10 a hundred times and that is it.
day 13 from the wire. driver called friday at supper and again an hour out. we walked around it together, i started it and ran it into 4 low and 4 high in the lot behind the shop before i signed anything.
paper was a Kansas title with the bank's lien release signed on the front, a bill of sale and the odometer statement. took the pile to the Richland County motor vehicle office monday. North Dakota does 5 percent excise on the purchase price, so 2,390 on 47,800, plus title and plates. no questions at the counter. i was more nervous about that than the truck and it took 25 minutes.

different brand, same place. i bought a 2023 F-250 Lariat 6.7 through lake park off a yard in Springfield, Missouri a week or so after you, and put it in its own thread so i don't clutter yours: 2023 F-250 Lariat, Springfield to Aberdeen. our paper looks about the same, except SD takes 4 percent.
47,800 on a 22 Big Horn with 41 was a good buy. the Ford guys at work quit teasing me when i told them yours.

six weeks, 2,940 miles. pinion seal done at a shop in Breckenridge, $265 with new gear oil, 1.8 hours of labor. matching Transforce for the left rear, used, about 70 percent tread, $110 mounted. that is the whole list.
it pulled the gooseneck with the Bobcat T66 every day of tiling season, around 14,500 loaded. 11.8 mpg towing on 13 and 210, 17.6 empty to Fargo. the Hemi did 8 and 14. rear air does what gooseneck said, the truck sits level and the nose doesn't point at the sky.
ordered the Ram ball insert, $385 at the dealer in town.

since this is your first Dakota winter with a Cummins. below zero it will sit on wait to start for a while, that is the grid heater. let it finish before you crank. and on real cold mornings it cycles the grid heater again after it starts, so the volt gauge bounces around for a few minutes. normal, not a charging problem. my old 2014 did it every january morning and scared my wife half to death.

UPDATE, end of november. something i did not see coming. took it to the Ram store in Fargo for an oil change and a software recall the Carfax had flagged, and the used car manager came out to the waiting room and offered 53,000 for it. straight purchase, no trade. that is 5,200 over my bid, three months and 6,100 miles later.
said no. i would just have to go find another one, and finding this one took me all summer.
the not so rosy part. the diff seal was on me. i asked about the warranty and got a fair answer: the leak was in the photos before i bid, so nothing was misrepresented, and a known leak is not what the 6 month coverage is there for. i knew that going in. also, email sent saturday gets answered monday. other than those two, every promise on the listing from the outfit in lake park held up.
minus 19 tuesday. plugged in overnight, waited out the grid heater like ranch_truck said, fired first crank. i will leave it there.
